Workman pipped to Duchess Salver
10th October 2011

Posted by Will Naylor  |  Posted in General

Stinchcombe star Tom Workman narrowly missed out on the Duchess Salver by just three points, despite his third victory of the season at the Cotswold Trophy.

Tom shot rounds of 71 and 72 to win the Trophy by two. But it was not enough to deny Henbury golfer Nick Day the season-long Salver; Day's third place secured the Salver by just three points, the smallest margin in its history.

Stinchcombe's junior captain Alex Higgs finished eight in the Trophy, making it two Stinchcombe players in the top ten.

A team wins to keep place in 1st division

Stinchcombe Hill's A team ended its 2011 North Gloucestershire Foursomes campaign on a high with a crucial 5-1 home win over Cirencester.

Stinchcombe teed off knowing that only victory would guarantee their place in the top division for next season. And the early signs were ominous, with most home pairs falling behind on the front nine. But the momentum swung on the back nine, with Stinchcombe easing to comfortable wins in four out of six matches. When county champion Tom Workman and former captain Richard Lamper won on the 18th, Stinchcombe's survival was sealed.

Stinchcombe's win was followed by the end-of-season presentation. Player of the year award went to Mark Pitcher, whose 7 wins out of 8 matches represents the best return by a Stinchcombe player since the A team rejoined the top division four years ago.
